April 30, 2024 – The vote to adopt the consent calendar includes several petitions brought to General Conference by UMKR and partners that had strong support in their legislative committees, including resolutions on divesting from occupier governments' bonds (Israel, Turkey, and Morocco), opposing Israeli military detention of Palestinian children, and defending our right to boycott and divest.
UMKR Commends Wespath's fulfillment of the 2024 General Conference resolution calling for divestment from occupier governments' bonds
August 7, 2025 – UMKR commends Wespath Benefits and Investments for their prayerful consideration and implementation of the resolution adopted by the United Methodist General Conference in 2024, which called for divestment from the oppressive military occupations maintained by Israel, Turkey, and Morocco.
Last year, the United Methodist Church became the first Christian denomination to take that groundbreaking step for human rights, and that historic call is now fulfilled by the church's primary investment arm.
Particularly needed at this time, barring investment in Israel's bonds will reduce the church's complicity in the horrifying genocide that the world is witnessing in Gaza, as well as Israel's apartheid regime in all of historic Palestine.
Going beyond divestment from these three occupier governments, the broad human rights criteria that Wespath has developed are a just and ethical framework for applying the church's values to its investments. UMKR hopes to see this strong human rights framework applied throughout the church's portfolio, that it may serve as a model of morally responsible investing for other institutional investors.
