Understanding Palestine and Israel, with Phyllis Bennis
Presented by UMKR and MFSA, 15 October 2025
Phyllis Bennis stands among the world's most knowledgeable and insightful analysts on the Middle East. The author of an indispensable primer on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, she has a gift for providing clear and accessible explanations for complex issues. In this special webinar, we explore with Bennis some of the most challenging questions that people around the world are grappling with today, including: What are the root causes of events on Oct 7, 2023 and genocidal war that has raged in Gaza since then? What should we know and understand about Hamas? What to think about the current ceasefire and the various plans that are arising for Gaza's future? With alarming developments in the West Bank, is formal annexation to Israel looming and what would that mean for the future of Palestine? How helpful are recent developments in Europe and in the Global South, and what is needed from them? What are the most important actions we can take today?
PHYLLIS BENNIS is a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington DC where she co-directs the New Internationalism Project. She is a leading voice in US and global movements supporting Palestinian rights and challenging US foreign policy. Phyllis serves as an international adviser to Jewish Voice for Peace, and she is a co-founder of US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, serving now on their advisory board. She has written numerous books on Palestine, the broader Middle East, US foreign policy and the United Nations, she is a frequent contributor to Democracy Now, al Jazeera, BBC, MSNBC and others, and she writes widely in US and international media outlets. Bennis has served as an informal adviser on the Middle East to top UN officials and she has twice been short-listed to become the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Her most recent book is Understanding Palestine and Israel (2025). From the publisher: "The book cuts through the noise and delivers clear, accessible answers to the most pressing questions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — questions that many have never had the opportunity to ask. In an easy to read, FAQ-style format, it covers the origins of the Israeli state, the movement for Palestinian liberation, U.S. foreign policy, and much, much more — including the events of October 7, 2023, the war that followed, and the role of the conflict in 2024 presidential election in the United States." About this book, Richard Falk has said: “This invaluable tour de force by Phyllis Bennis offers readers the most comprehensive, lucid, readable, and reliably informed and evidence-based guide available...While objective in its use of data and interpretative commentary, the book is
impressively clear about the distinction between oppressor and oppressed.”
