The time of the COVID-19 pandemic
is unlike anything the world has seen in
our lifetimes. It has required radical
re-thinking of how we do everything, including how we can continue to support the justice causes that still urgently need our attention.
Activists are essential workers.
We are seeing that those with the will to oppress and to violate human rights are hoping to use the distraction of COVID-19 to their advantage. From Trump in the US to Bolsonaro in Brazil, from Orban in Hungary to Modi in India and Netanyahu in Israel, leaders and governments with an authoritarian bent have been taking actions that they hope will not be noticed while most people's attention is focused on combating the coronavirus.
The marginalized and oppressed peoples of the world are especially vulnerable during this global health crisis, and they need us more than ever. We have seen that they are more likely to be neglected or even targeted by their governments and their neighbors during this time.
In this section of our website, you will find:
• ACTIVISM FROM HOME:
Campaigns and actions you can support while staying at home, from long-term, continuing campaigns to specific Covid-19-related solidarity.
▶︎ DIRECT AID:
Palestinians living under a brutal military occupation and siege are among those most at risk in the world to COVID-19 and urgently need our material support. We have a few suggestions of how you could provide that help.
Diverse digital events you can attend from home include discussions with fellow activists, virtual conferences, unique presentations by activist leaders, and exclusive film screenings.
▶︎ NEWS & COMMENTARY:
News and analysis of what is happening in Israel/Palestine due to COVID-19 and how the people and their leaders are coping with it.
▶︎ SPIRITUAL & PERSONAL SUPPORT:
Prayers and devotionals created by many in our church and others, many specifically for this period; personal support for our emotional lives provides some assistance in coping with the stress of this time; and we also have a little bit of Covid-19-related humor.
An Appeal from UMKR
UMKR has important church legislation for our denomination's global General Conference, to be held in 2021. These resolutions address:
• protecting Palestinian children,
• defending the right to boycott,
•divesting from the bonds of occupation governments, and other timely justice issues.
We also have BIG PLANS for educating
A LOT of people throughout our church about Palestinian rights, with literature, displays, speakers, meals, and witness actions!
With very limited resources, UMKR has made a BIG impact in the global United Methodist Church! Groundbreaking divestment and boycott actions by the UMC would never have happened without UMKR's advocacy AND all the extraordinary partners and allies who helped us.
General Conference is always our BEST OPPORTUNITY to make a worldwide impactfor Palestinian rights throughout our denomination.
But, if we are to succeed in advocating for justice with thousands of United Methodists who come to General Conference from four continents,WE NEED YOUR HELP!
